Native Plants for your Garden

WHAT IS A NATIVE PLANT AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS  A native plant is a plant that would have been growing on Long Island naturally before the arrival of European settlement.  Native plants have co-evolved with birds, butterflies and bees to provide food, shelter and pollen to maintain pollination and a functioning food chain which benefits us.  Natives provide essential eco-services to keep us and our environment healthy by eliminating the need for pesticides, insecticides and the excessive bio-cide laden lawn watering which has degraded our drinking water and threatens the health of our sole source aquifer. Plants with an asteriks (*) are used in our East Hampton Town Hall Pollinator Garden.
